OUR HISTORY

Austin Trust Company was the first private trust company to be chartered by the Texas Department of Banking, receiving charter number T-001 in 1987. Our Founder, William J. Hudspeth, Jr. started the firm at a time when frequent bank closures and mergers resulted in impersonal, subpar customer service. After Texas law was changed to authorize the incorporation of independent trust companies, he realized opportunity amongst the instability. He understood that authentic stewardship was the missing factor in successfully managing clients’ trusts, not just for them but for generations to come, and so, Austin Trust Company was founded with the idea that there is more to these services than pure asset management.

As if he could see into the booming future of Austin, Mr. Hudspeth secured a prominent home for Austin Trust Company at the corner of S. Congress and Riverside that some Austinites may remember as the old Night Hawk Restaurant.

Mr. Hudspeth served as Chairman of the Board and actively managed a book of accounts until his passing in 2021. His ingenuity, integrity and faithful service to his clients will remain the bedrock of our company’s foundation.

Our experienced staff comprises 26 (and growing) full-time employees, most of whom are Austin Trust Company Shareholders, boasting a median tenure of 12+ years. We have grown to over $1 billion in assets under management and serve families in Texas, the United States and beyond. Each account administrator and investment officer discuss various strategies to develop an investment program that satisfies our clients’ financial needs paired with their risk tolerance, after which the account and investment performance are reviewed regularly.

Accountability

Austin Trust Company is chartered and regulated by the Texas Department of Banking.  The Department of Banking performs an examination every 18 months to determine the Company’s overall condition and financial health.  In addition to the required state examination, an independent audit, and Information Technology (IT) audit is performed annually, and a Service Organization Control (SOC) audit is performed biennially. The Board of Directors meets monthly and is charged with overseeing the company’s operation and the administration of its accounts.
